Piano Lessons for Kids in Little Rock

I heard this today. A new student came in who was 4 years old, and her mother told me that it was hard to find someone to take a child for piano lessons in the Little Rock area!

This was not news to me. I’ve been teaching for 11 years now, and a lot of teachers in this area won’t take young children. There are a few reasons for this, but I have the solution to that!

A child needs to be able and to know the following things before starting piano lessons in a formal setting

They need to know:

  • how to say the 1st 7 letters of the alphabet forwards and backwards
  • they need the attention span to sit for at least 30 minutes
  • they need to know basic math skills
  • the need hand coordination, or hands big enough to reach at least 5 keys simultaneously
  • they need lots of parental assistance at home to be a success

Now if you’re saying that your young child can’t do all of these things yet. Don’t fret! The solution for taking piano lessons in Little Rock is to start them at Park Hill Performing Arts Academy in the Rockstars Class!

…The Rockstars Class is designed for ages 3 to 5.

In this class, your child will learn:

  • the basics of reading music
  • the rhythm they need to be a success
  • important listening skills
  • music theory definitions
  • beginning piano skills

This class focuses on movement, and games to help your child get the best foundation for when they are able to focus long enough for a formal lesson. It is important to go ahead and get them started! They will be ahead once they do take a formal lesson!

…How do you join?

  • The classes are $47.00 per month for a 1 hour class
  • Classes are given on different days

Thursday Tunes-Uptown Funk!

Thursday’s Tune Review is Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars and the awesome tune Uptown Funk! My 6 year daughter and I have been jamming this song since it was released! Bruno Mars is a huge star on the music scene right now, and came through Little Rock not long ago.

This song reminds of the 70’s when funk was prominent, and bands like Sly and the Family Stone were popular. Some of you may remember hearing those bands live or in the club!

You can hear disco and funk elements with the amazing horn parts and bass line in this tune, and maybe you also a jamming it in the car with the windows rolled down…even though it is January in Arkansas!

Some of the fun of teaching music classes to toddlers and young children between the ages of 2 and 5 is that they love to dance! And one of the best ways to get your child introduced to that is letting them dance and make noise!

This would be a great fun tune to play for them and play stop and start! Or musical chairs, or just let them show you their moves. Part of learning to play an instrument like piano or guitar when your child is old enough is teaching them how to listen to music, and movement is one of the best ways to do so!

The Top 5 Things Every Kid Needs for Private Music Lesson Success

guitar lessons little rockYou’ve registered your child for piano, voice, or guitar lessons! They are excited, but now what? Here are the 5 steps that will help your child get the most out of their lessons, and give the greater chances of success!

The Top 5

  1. Help them develop a practice habit! This is super easy to do in actuality. At the Academy we work on a points system.  And, we help you get your child to practice without the fuss by using a simple technique that gets them to sit down with their instrument in 10 minute sessions! Then, when they earn their points through practice time, they can spend their points in the Music Money Store!
  2. Let them play! I’ve often had parents complain that sometimes their child doesn’t want to practice their assignment. The child just wants to play the instrument and make noise! Well…grab your headphones, because that it totally ok! When you combine point number 1, and let them have some exploration time, they will soon have developed a habit of playing. That is exactly what we want them to do!
  3. Tip them! What does this mean? It means giving them a little tip jar that you drop change into when you see them practicing. Or maybe offer to take them to ice cream, or play video games. Just give them an incentive.
  4. Give them at least 90 days to try it! To have the greatest success in learning anything, it takes habits and consistent action.  It won’t be fair to make a decision on your child’s success before 90 days. You will have to be patient before you hear “Sweet Home Alabama” or Beethoven coming from their instrument!
  5. Encourage them. I want you to make sure that you tell your child that it is ok to make mistakes and sound terrible at first! Everyone does! Trust me! Most of them don’t understand that making mistakes is part of learning. You can’t have success without making them. That’s a life rule! So go ahead and encourage them by letting them know they are getting better, or they played that song well!

Park Hill Performing Arts Academy Opens January 18, 2015

In 2012, I moved to Historic Park Hill in North Little Rock, and set up shop in my house to start over building a clientele of students on this side of the river. I had been teaching 7 years already, and was accustomed to teaching about 45 kids and adults per week.

When we made the decision to move to North Little Rock, not many decided to come across the river, so there I was building up a business again, and I named it Park Hill Piano Studio. The studio operated successfully, and within a few years, I had built my business back up.

I remember the day that I was sitting at my piano, and thought…”either take a leap and go to a commercial location, or stay here where you can’t take any more students”. So, I gathered up my purse, and got in the car.  I drove down W H. Ave, and stopped at the light, and lo and behold…right across the street staring back at me was a “For Lease” sign.

I don’t believe too much in coincidence. I think everything is setting up and presenting itself at the right time. So I took the number down, and a few weeks later I was painting the walls of my new place!

I can’t tell you how excited I am to serve the North Little Rock, Sherwood, Jacksonville, and Cabot areas with piano lessons, guitar lessons, voice lessons, and acting classes. I even have enough space to bring back the toddler music classes and rockin’ music birthday parties!

The Open House is set for Sunday, January 18th from 2 to 4 pm. Come by and take a look, and register to win 3 months of lessons of your choice!

Can’t wait to meet all of you!
